Frequently Asked Questions
Kokuyo
Kokuyo traces its history back to 1905.
In 1971, Kokuyo was listed on the second section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the second section of the Osaka Securities Exchange. In the following year, Kokuyo was listed on the first sections of the two exchanges.
The name Kokuyo was coined by our founder, Kuroda Zentaro. He created the name by combining the kanji character for “country” with the character for “honor” to express his wish that the company would be the pride of the country. The country in this case was not Japan but Kuroda's homeland of Etchu Province (now Toyama Prefecture).
“Kokuyo” was not actually the name of the company at the time. The company was called Kuroda Kokkōdō (literally, “Kuroda national light hall”). The word “Kokuyo” adorned the products that Kuroda sold, which included covers for Japanese-style account ledgers, vouchers, invoices, and so on. Over the years, people grew fond of the expression and so, in 1961, the company adopted it as its name.
